Forget adult colouring books – I’m cross stitching

I know you love your adult colouring books, and I don’t want to take that away from you. But have you tried cross stitching? It’s easy to do, is super portable and you can make super fun stuff that you’ll actually want to display or gift.

Cross stitching is a style of embroidery using X-shaped stitches in a tiled pattern to form a picture. Beginners should start on aida cloth, while more experienced stitchers might choose to use linen.

I taught myself to cross stitch when I was 10, by trial and error through books with frilly aprons cross stitched with fancy roses. Today, my favourite patterns are the ridiculous ones.

I usually have one or two projects on the go – here are a few of the gifts I made this year.
